Funny Car Updates #52 9/8/08 - 9/10/08
Final Update

9/8/08
This and tomorrow’s editions of the FC updates will be the last. I have sold the car on Ebay for $35K including all spares and the trailer to a 45-year old contractor who is doing very well, as opposed to this contractor who is doing next to nothing. Hence he is buying a FC and I am selling it.
I moved the FC trailer out in to the middle of the driveway, cut ALL the bougainvillea along that west fence. A HORRIBLE job! I have a 3-man crew detailing the trailer, and it is coming out surprisingly nice, considering it is beat up 14-year old paint.

The buyer has no idea I'm going to this trouble, but I just want what I would want, the best it can be. The buyer is due here at noon on Wednesday.
I'm going to roll the car out tomorrow, start it, pull out the lift system, and detail it. The next two days will be full of work getting all the stuff out, and the spare parts packed in.
The buyer is bringing a friend who is interested in the 64 Hemi car. That would be awesome.

After years of storing parts, and working this car to perfection again, it is sad not to be able to get it out with Randy and do some match racing and just get some laps. But it IS nice to have this serious tonnage moving out of the garage and driveway. The sale of the car is a fiscal lifesaver at this point.
Here are some pictures of the detailing process and the final moments with the car:

I went to bed at 8 PM last night. THOROUGHLY exhausted.
John and Roy and I, plus the three-man Candy detail crew, got a lot done ysterday.

Roy started up the generator, and we flipped the BIG switch over to run the trailer on the generator. The AC fired up, but does not cool. That is disappointing, but will be the new owner’s job to correct.
The trailer was detailed on Monday, but was not touched for detailing yesterday, just the race car. At this point the trailer looks as good as it can, wheels polished, and the paint looks great for what it is.
This morning Candy and crew will be attacking the Polara, then finish off the trailer details.
We removed the lift system and light bar, and I made up a cover plate for the old air filler area on the right rear quarter panel.
Looks fine.

Above John is installing the block-off plate for the old lift system controls and air input. I removed the entire system and all lift controls.
We also stripped all the lettering off. As the car did not see a lot of sun, the paint below is not standing out, a good thing.

We started it up briefly Tuesday, checked the Accusump for priming and refill, and shut it off. I’ll go through procedures with John, the new buyer, today. I hope he fits in the car OK.

I removed the old CO-2 bottles and their brackets, ground down the tabs, and Roy painted the area. The car looks cleaner now.
I rolled the spare motor out, dusted it off, and it will be John’s call how we secure it in the truck they use.
It will require rolling it up the ramps to get it on using its dolly.

As it turned out, we set the motor BEHIND the FC in the trailer, and blocked it in with some wood strips to keep its dolly from moving, and some tie-downs. It should dramatically lighten the tongue weight.
I removed the light bar and its control as well.

So the car cleaned up beautifully, and here is how it looked from the right front with the glass out for cleaning, in its final state.

and a final left rear and somewhat emotional shot of the cleaned up final piece.
I left the two small red stripes and the Justice Bros sponsorship logos, although I doubt the new owner will be using Justice methanol in Texas.

When the guys arrived for the car, the new purported owner was not here. His two buddies took care of everything, and as it turns out, one of them, Sal, is likely going to own the car, and intends to be driving it at Texas Motorplex this Friday! Turns out John’s wife is unhappy about the car purchase (she is scared).

When we sent to start the car, ZERO!!!!!!!!
It took less than three minutes to diagnose the problem: a wire had come off the fuse box while were painting and cleaning that area. A simple push of the wire back on its clip did the trick.

Sal MIGHT be interested in the Thumper motor, which I rolled out for him.

The Dodge boy, Don, called numerous times, and finally spoke with me, asking two questions:
1-Is the color stock
2-Is the interior scheme stock

I emailed Byron and am awaiting his reply.

So, thanks for the 14 years of interest.
Time for a new chapter: the KILOKUB.
