Funny Car Updates #51 9/22/07 - 4/19/08

9/22/07
Jim Partridge just called from Fontana, and had some interesting news.
They are constructing a sound wall 20’ high the length of the track on the north side, and it should be ready for a conditional use permit in early October.
I volunteered my car for sound tests using zoomies and a muffled system for comparison.
Jim says they are set up at 500’ down the track, 50’ from the lane, 4’ high, and average an “A” weighted scale using a Radio Shack meter over 5 seconds. Their “less than number” is 109 db, which corresponds to 94 db out where the City measures their sound.
So I MIGHT get a shot at running solo on the track for science.
Jim is hoping to run unmuffled cars after the sound wall is in place.
The next 2007 dates there are:
10/6-7
10/19-21
10/27-28

Randy has found some Borla mufflers on ebay under half price. These are NOT directly from Borla, but from someone who has considerable stock from Borla.
I am going to see the Borla girl tomorrow (Sunday) at 11 AM at Oxnard Airport at Victoria and 5th St.
I will take my muffled set with me for some trial fitting.

I have not done anything to the muffled system other than install the Borlas on the other headers. I will take the car out of the trailer tomorrow, weld up the Borlas snug, and we are scheduled to go to Irwindale.
The trailer batteries were low on water, were not taking a charge, hence the trailer generator would not start. That is done, but the cooling fan for the generator does not function. We are pulling the car out tomorrow, airing up the tires, test-firing it, checking function on the trans, Accusump, etc., and all things being good, will be off for the first runs in a long time.

Well, it cost me $3000 NOT to go racing! The red dually nuked a head, overheated, and John and I spent until nearly 10 PM getting the trailer back with the yellow truck, getting the dually towed (a MAJOR deal).

Took the trailer out with the yellow truck, made a single pass, and had two small malfunctions.
I took the funnycar to Irwindale for its first run in about three years. We had two small malfunctions:
1-the pneumatic body lift system did something weird, the short of it is that for $150 and one new lift ram it is fixed
2-i failed to reset the Accusump to off after start up, and i think it caused me to run with three extra quarts in the pan, causing some oil blow out.
That is also solved.
I changed the exhaust back to the zoomies today and found the starter had blown off the gear (the spring came off and twisted up between the flex plate and the motor plate). I had a spare starter, so that is also fixed.
So if I can get someone to join me tomorrow, I'll give Irwindale another shot.

Jay came over and we rearranged the yard, moved the trailer, rolled out the FC, and looked at adding the Aero mufflers.
Then I brought out the Suburbans. We can actually do that, but not today.
On my run at Irwindale I blew a little oil out. I suspected I had not closed the Accusump after start up. I had changed the oil yesterday, so I started it up, closed the Accusump, then drained the oil to see how much I have in the pan now. Close enough to eight quarts came out, although surprisingly milky.
We then bolted the zoomies back and when I was under there I found a starter gear in the bellypan. Sure enough, when I went to start it, no gear! The spring had come off and was wedged between the flex plate and motor plate.
Jay had to leave, I found the spare and got it in, tested that it cranks, put everything away, and took a hot bath.
